School of the Future Brooklyn-"Where Everyone Must Learn"

SCHOOL OF THE Future Brooklyn

School Welcome

From the Desk of Principal Robert L. Burnside

Dear School of the Future Brooklyn Family,

I am so excited to have you with us as we embark on the 2019-2020 school year. I am certain that some amazing learning experiences and memorable moments will take place. I look forward to sharing them with you in the very near future (Parent Teacher Back to School Night, September 19, 2019 from 5 pm-8 pm).

I hope your children have had the opportunity to complete their summer reading and math packets. Additionally, they should have made some wonderful connections with the stories. The summer packets are worth 25% of the first marking period grade. Summer packets were due on September 6. They will not be accepted after September 11.

I am also pleased to share several enhancements for the 2019-2020 school year. This year we will have a STEM program (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) for our 7th and 8th graders, a debate team, Restorative Leadership Team, Students Council, Algebra for All,  Living Environment (Regent class) and we are introducing a house system (similar to the system in Harry Potter.) Students will have the opportunity to earn points individually as well as for their house. The purpose is to build individual as well as group accountability among the student body. There are three houses: Obama, Carter and Smith House.

In trying to create a more cohesive school community, I am expecting more parent participation for all school-wide events. We are encouraging you to attend school events, as your attendance will be attached to students' ability to participate in certain extra-curricular activities. For example, if you attend a Parent Teacher Conference or the Science Fair, your child will earn points towards our house system. If you are unable to attend, your child will not receive any points.

Lastly, attendance is one of our school’s priority. Last year we were under the City’s average for school-wide attendance. Please understand, your children’s attendance is crucial to their educational success. Studies show, attendance is aligned to academic success. To this end, I want to see 100% attendance for all my students.
