The NYCDOE K-8: Passport to Social Studies program is a comprehensive instructional resource that integrates the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) and the New York State K-8 Social Studies Framework to support strong social studies teaching and learning.

An effective social studies program allows students to make sense of the world in which they live, make connections between major ideas and their own lives, and see themselves as active members of a global community. While knowledge of content is very important, it is equally important to engage our students in historical thinking. This program challenges students to think like historians and encourages them to raise questions, think critically, consider many perspectives, and gather evidence in support of their interpretations through the practice of chronological processing, decision-making, and historical research and analysis. These real-world skills will serve students well as participating citizens of a democracy.

STEM Program

STEM Program

School of the Future Brooklyn was one of the twenty-two schools selected to receive a substantial boost from Borough President Adams’ FY19 capital budget in order the fund STEM through Brooklyn. SOFBK received $225,000 for A-Stem Carts.

“A noted educator once said, ‘Don’t tell me where your priorities are…show me where you spend your money and I’ll tell you what they are,’” said Borough President Adams. “This budget shows the world where Brooklyn’s priorities are: preparing our children for college and career success that will power the future of our city — STEAM power. This capital budget is helping to cultivate Brooklyn’s next generation of scientists, engineers, technicians, architects, and innovators. This is about ensuring that our young people are empowered with the skills to compete in the global economy once they graduate from their studies.”

Mindfulness practices in schools have shown to  decreases stress and anxiety, increase attention, improve interpersonal relationships, and strengthen compassion.

We have a Mindfulness Room that students can use if they need to take a few moments to themselves.
